TAZHERANSKAYA STEPPE AND OLHON ISLAND

Baikal is vast. To see even a half of Baikal you will need about two weeks. But you have less than a week! And you are coming to Baikal first time and don’t know if you would visit Siberia once more. So, we offer you the most interesting place where you can also rest, swim and enjoy good weather! Let’s go to the center of the lake to the very heart of Baikal - Maloe sea and Olhon Island. You’ll not be mistaken. Here is paticular microclimate. Quintity of sunny days is more then quintity of overcast days. There are little rainfalls and no mist. There are abrupt rocks and Baikal depth in the East side of the island and one of the vastest shoals – Maloe sea stretching from the West side. There are many picturesque islands, warm bays with sandy bottoms. There you can find almost all landscapes of Baikal shores such as Tazheranskaya steppe, light pine forests, relic fir-grove, sandy dunes. People lives here from of old. Territory is reached of archeologic monuments. This is historical and sacral center of Baikal, focus of ancient legends and traditions, lakes’ ghosts habitat, place of ancient shamans’ rituals.
PROGRAM
1st day:
Arriving to Irkutsk. Meeting. Going to the warm gulfs of Maloe Sea. (Distance is 270 km, it takes about 6-7 hours to get where with stops for relaxation and short walks). Lunch on the way (tradition buryat cuisine). The road goes along Tazheranskaya steppe. Visiting petroglyphs. Stopping near Obo – a holy place for offering to Buryat spirits. After arriving to the tourist base, accommodation and lunch you will have short excursion to an ancient settlement of Kuerkans, to a settlement of primitive man and take a look at surrounding bays. Here you can climb on the Shibete peak. Beautiful view is opened from it top. Dinner.
Optional: sauna.
2d day:
Breakfast. Traveling to “Valley of sleeping ghosts” - coming down to Mechta cave - “Arso” bay - Lunch (dry rations) - Climbing on the air view peak “Tanhan” - coming back to the base. Dinner
3d day:
Ferry to Olhon island. Going to Huzhir village (35 km). Accommodation on the tourist base. Lunch. Walking to holy cape Shamanka. It means White Rock. It is “visiting card” of Baikal. Taking photos. Visiting sandy beaches of Saraiskaya bay and local regional museum with collection of ancient household goods reflecting life and culture of islanders. Dinner.
Optional: take a steam sauna and tasting Baikal’s fish (omul, white-fish, grayling).
4th day:
Breakfast. Jeep-excursion to the north end of Olhon island (about 60 km). Visiting picturesque places: Sagan-Hushin (Three brothers) rock, Peschanaya bay (where GULAG camp was located). tracking to the end of island Hoboi cape. There you can see baikal nerpas it you will fortunate. Lunch in the Uzury village. Omul fish-soup. Coming back to the tourist base. Dinner.
Optional: meeting with local shaman.
5th day:
Breakfast. Walking along shore by motor-boat. Visiting islands of Maloe Sea. Lunch. Dinner.
Optional: ride bicycles, horses.
6th day:
Breakfast. Leaving the island and coming back to Irkutsk (distance is 300 km). Lunch in a roadside cafe (on your own). If you will have to wait for the ferry on the way, you can visit Sinners’ Mountain. Take a stone with you as the legend tells that every stone left there means leaving some sin. The bigger stone the heavier sin. Arriving to "Baikal-eco" office.
